Take an hour and fire up that phone, baby. trending idea

Did you know 90% of text messages are read within the first 10 minutes of being received? Did you know a phone call can have the same psychological impact on someone as a hug? Have you rung up mom or dad or Uncle Fred lately? We trust our friends and family more than we trust strangers in our inbox, so why not take an hour on November 3rd (or a day before) and go through that old contact list with short texts like "hey... more »

Organize a Letter Writing Party

Lots of organizations are partnering with Vote Forward to get out the vote through the BIG SEND, a letter-writing campaign that's engaging, effective and easily accomplished. From coast-to-coast, people are writing 10 MILLION letters of encouragement to fellow voters in key states reminding them to get to the polls or mail in their ballots for the November 3 election. We're prepping letters NOW so we're ready for the... more »

Assuage the Fear

There are many reasons why eligible citizens might not register and those who are registered, might not vote. Fear of the unknown and possible chaos of the pols might be one reason people stay away. My idea is to create very short videos in real polling places that walk citizens through what they can expect and how they will proceed on voting day. These videos can then be shared on social media in a voters' region.

Banish the Apathy

If potential voters don't think their votes will make a difference, they will have a tendency to not vote. For example, in contests that are not competitive, there is a decrease in voting numbers. BUT, this can be changed with real, personal, stories on how just one person's vote CAN make a difference. These stories could be shared in short videos via social media, or they could be shared to people calling lists of people... more »

Upping the Registration Numbers

Provide lists of non-registered voters broken down into counties nationwide. Offer these lists to people who want to make personal phone calls to people. Create a script or decision-tree for callers to use. Make it into a contest. So, the lists are available on-line and one-by-one I call people. As soon as I get off the phone, I add my notes on their reasoning why or why not to vote. Each person I call is tagged with... more »

The new LAN gaming party -> the GOTV party

Data from November 2018 voting patterns clearly showed that only 32% of voters in the 18-24 year age band voted, compared to 51%-66% in older age bands. Clearly, we need to get the younger voters more excited about voting, and appeal to them through activities like gaming that they enjoy.

With high speed wireless connections available, or made available by GOTV campaigners, young people of voting age can be invited to... more »

Swing the mood -> Enthusiasm

In the style of Pres. Obama's speech about the importance of voting, people are challenged to post their own 2-minute videos about why GOTV is so important to them. Share the videos on social media. Raise awareness. Infect with enthusiasm that people can swing the mood and the future of the nation.

Videos with the most likes, reshares, etc (at precinct/local, city, state, etc) level may be entered into a lottery for... more »

Virtual celebrity hugs 4 votes

Ask movie and TV celebrities to take part in a virtual hugs 4 votes incentivization campaign. Anyone who votes and can submit a photo to prove he or she voted (e.g. pic of polling station, or pic of ballot drop box, voting ink on finger, etc) will receive a virtual hug GIF from his or her chosen celebrity and personalized with his or her name.

Lots of celebrities are politically active now, are willing to lend their... more »

Like the Ice Bucket Challenge

Each person can nominate 3 people on social media. They get 3 days (72 hours) to take their necessary next step to voting - either registering to vote or requesting their email or paper ballots respectively. Or confirming that they have already taken the steps. Or, if not of voting age, confirming via social media post why they cannot vote. Once they are done, each of these 3 people calls out another 3 people on social... more »

Nextdoor, and social media pages of communities

There is a need to get out the vote in all states. Complacency, or taking certain states for granted, would be a bad idea. I suggest organizing and motivating communities through Nextdoor or - in the case of communities that might not use Nextdoor but have households participating in Facebook Groups or WhatsApp - the appropriate social media pages.

"All for one and one for all" - a PACT TO VOTE

"All for one and one for all" - the phrase from The Three Musketeers (Alexandre Dumas), reflects the shared responsibility in a pact between individuals. I'd encourage each person to form a pact with at least two small sets of friends and acquaintances. Maybe 3-5 people in each set. The key is to NOT stay within the comfort zone of people that you think you know well enough to talk politics with. So, one set would be... more »

Pay It Forward - Donation Style

Select a worthy national or local charity that focuses on supporting GOTV function (either registration or actual day of assistance like providing transportation to polling places in battleground states).

Instead of merely making a donation - split it into 2-4 different donations and do so "in the name of" someone else. Make a Social Media post tagging those people (or contact them directly) and letting them know... more »

Co-ordinate GOTV outreach and groups through secure communication platforms like Signal

It would be prudent to set up GOTV outreach and coordination on secure encrypted communication platforms that are still free for the public to use. And have a fallback option in case one platform has an outage. For instance, the Signal app (Brian Acton, former co-founder of WhatsApp, now backs Signal). There might be other or better platforms for secure organizing. Non-profit foundations pushing for GOTV and building... more »

Transportation services, carpooling and commercial carpooling (Uber, Lyft, etc)

While in-person voting this year might be less at polling stations, the success of GOTV rests in no small measure on providing vulnerable or more disadvantaged people the means of transportation to their polling stations and back. Disadvantaged people who might not have arranged for mail-in voting or email voter forms are also the ones more likely to need help with transportation. So, GOTV organizers need a cadre of volunteers... more »
